Welcome to the 2008 - 2009 3rd Grade Class!
Third Grade at Holy Nativity School is taught by Mrs. Lehua Alo Williams and is assisted by Mrs. Grace Terada.
*This Fragile Earth Our Island Home* ~ In 3rd grade we learn to examine our world scientifically (study of matter, physical geography, zoology) and soulfully (What are some of the great world stories? How do these stories speak to us?) We learn to celebrate the differences among humankind and share our experiences with each other.
Our 3rd grade classroom environment encourages students to demonstrate the joy of learning and appreciate that learning is a life-long pursuit in striving to do one's "personal best." Time management, self-assessment and goal setting are key components of the third grade curriculum. Students learn to reflect, analyze, synthesize and reevaluate their academic, social and spiritual growth. The ability to work independently and purposefully is emphasized in all areas of the curriculum. The importance of respect for one's self, the classroom community, the outside community and the environment is highly emphasized, encouraged and modeled.
Intrinsic motivation is an essential characteristic of enthusiastic and successful learners. The more children are rewarded by internal feelings of satisfaction based on personal effort and choice (rather than external rewards such as stickers or points), the greater their internal motivation becomes. Internal motivation keeps the focus on learning; internal rewards meet the universal need for meaning and fulfillment.
The daily responsibility and social interaction among students and teachers in the third grade encourages responsible and respectful individuals who are able to work in collaboration with one another in order to fulfill the day-to-day needs of our classroom environment.
