Aloha Everyone!
Parent Conferences are next week. If you want to conference with Mr. Mac and me, please sign up for a time in the office. If you do not sign up, we will assume that you do not feel a conference is necessary. If there are no available times that work for you, email us and we will work something out.

LANGUAGE ARTS

Last week Pearl earned a star in the Gum Hall of Fame. Look for bulletin articles from Anthony, Kira, Jolie, and Jackie. Since Valentine's Day is coming up, assigned writing is to write an unexpected valentine--like from a computer to a printer, a cat to catnip, or cookies to milk.

SOCIAL STUDIES

We'll be finishing up with pirates on Wednesday, the same day the pirate logs are due. We should also get to try our compass directions and eye patch activities. Starting on Thursday, we'll begin our unit on Native American Indians. Students will choose a tribe to research and will make a PowerPoint presentation to teach the class. Details will be handed out later this week and will be included in next week's newsletter.

PIRATE LOG: You are going to choose or make up a pirate and write 3 ship logs (journal entries) from his or her point of view. Each log should be ˝ to 1 page long, font size no larger than 20. You must stay true to what we know about pirates and the technology of his or her time.

A log entry might include comments about weather and sea conditions; trouble the ship encountered; condition of the ship; mood of the crew; an account of a battle, injuries, and booty; information about food and supplies; or plans for upcoming days.
The 3 log dates do not need to be consecutive (in a row).
This assignment may be completed on the computer or by hand.

The log is due Wednesday, February 8. Late work will be marked down. You have Writing Workshop time to work on your log. It is also scheduled as homework on February 6 and 7.
