Holy Nativity School's Keiki Co-Op is a parent/child cooperative program dedicated to nurturing and supporting families. The parents, teachers, and child have the responsibility to be intregal partners in the child's first educational experience. Each family volunteers at least once a month in the Co-Op to participate in the nurturing of the children.
By working together, each participant is committed to maintain and foster a safe, joyful and loving environment. The result - parent, teachers, and child share in the "joy of learning" together.
History & Background
In 1993 Keiki Co-Op began, through the efforts of three dedicated women from Holy Nativity Church, to care for about 10 children. They met once a week in Glantz Hall and provided care for children 10 months to 18 months old. Moms had an opportunity to share the joys and burdens of toddler care with others.
In September 1995, the Keiki Co-Op began operating in the unoccupied curate's residence and became a fully licensed facility witha trained and experienced early childhood educator. This program was supervised by a teacher and an assistant and had 15 two year olds and 18 three year olds. Starting in the 2007-08 school year, the Co-Op will serve three year olds Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-noon. A new early education center is being planned, which would allow for the resumption of a program for two year olds.
Our Philosophy
We believe that each child is a unique person and develops physically, intellectually, socially, and emotionally at their own pace. Each child has an individual personality, learning style, and family background. Young children learn best by doing, repeating, exploring, imitating, and interacting with other children and adults.
These experiences are enriched with appropriate adult supervision. Our adult-child ratio is about 1:4 and insures that we have the best opportunity to meet each child's needs. This far exceeds the national recommendations of 1:10 for three year olds.
Curriculum
Children have hands-on experience in art, music, science, literature, and language. Emphasis is on learning about themselves, their community, the world they live in and how to be a part of the world around them. The program includes excursions and periodic visits from community resource specialists such as the Holy Nativity School Specialists in Religion, Art, Music, and Physical Education.
Three year olds learn self-expression through language, arts, science, and play. They are given opportunities to develop fine motor skills, large motor skills, social skills, and independence. Sand play, water play, play dough, small puzzles, free play time with riding toys, large balls, running games are some ways in which their motor skills are developed. Social/emotional cooperative activities help teach children to share and play together. The children are encouraged to express their knowledge in a variety of ways. At the Keiki Co-Op learning is always fun!
